Borrowing Policies

Cheshire Public Library has established the following circulation guidelines.  These guidelines help ensure quality customer service & enable the library to practice non-discriminatory procedures, protect the privacy of patrons & provide protection from misuse of patron cards by unauthorized persons.

Getting a Card

You must present identification confirming your street address when applying for a new card or updating your card.

You are responsible for items checked out on your card. Lost, stolen, or expired cards must be replaced or updated.

Your Account

By law, staff cannot look up other accounts or family members’ accounts except for a minor child.

You must possess a current, valid library card to check out library materials or to have staff look up your account.

Borrowing Limits

There are no limits on most items. You are welcome to borrow as much as you can carry, EXCEPT:

Museum Passes: 2 items, Cheshire residents only.

Mobile Hotspots: 4 times per year per household, Cheshire residents only. Hotspots must be returned at the Cheshire Public Library front desk or your account will be charged $10. You must sign a Hotspot Lending Policy at the time of checkout.

Hoopla: 5 items per month

RBdigital, Overdrive / Libby: 10 items at a time

Quik Fliks (No holds, no renewals), New DVDs, Blu-Rays.

14 Days
DVDs, Children’s DVDs, New Adult Fiction, FastTrack Books, Mobile Hotspots, Magazines, Binge Boxes, current Nutmeg Books.

28 Days
Audiobooks, Children’s Books (except current Nutmeg Books), Nonfiction, CDs, Older Fiction, all Large Print

42 Days
Book Club Kits (No holds, no renewals)

Digital Loan Periods

Hoopla – 5 items per month
3 days: Movies, TV
7 days: Music
21 days: Ebooks, Audiobooks

RBdigital – 10 items at a time
10 days: Ebooks, Audiobooks
Unlimited: Magazines do not expire and do not count against the 10 item at a time limit.

Overdrive / Libby – 10 items at a time
21 days: All materials

EBSCO
7 days: All materials

Charges for Late Items

Adult Materials: 15¢ per day

Children & Teen Materials: 5¢ per day

Museum Passes: $10 per day*

Mobile Hotspots: $10 per day*

*Senior citizens (65 and older) are charged late fees on museum passes and hotspots.

Materials returned in the bookdrops after the library closes will be checked in the following business day.

Renewals

All items may be renewed TWICE, unless someone is waiting for them.

No Renewals can be placed on: Binge Boxes, FastTrack books, Mobile Hotspots, Museum Passes, Quik Flicks (7 day movies).

Items checked out will be automatically renewed up to TWO (2) times provided they are not:

  • On hold for another patron
  • Designated as non-renewable
  • Inter-library Loan items
  • Downloadable items

Holds & Reserves

Holds may be placed on all items EXCEPT:

  • Binge Boxes
  • Book Club Kits
  • FastTrack books
  • Mobile Hotspots
  • Museum Passes
  • Quik Fliks (7 day movies)

Holds may be placed in person, by phone, or online via My Account.

Inter-library loan items will only be obtained for Cheshire residents. Out-of-town patrons will need to contact their hometown libraries to request items that are not available through our library’s consortium. Search here to see what’s available in our consortium.
