Friends of the Library Book Sale

Spring 2019 Book Sale

Why do the Friends of CPL have book sales?

The Friends just completed a record-breaking Spring book sale! Why do we have book sales, and why do we have book sorters sniff, clean, and box books year-round? How do we get eager volunteers to carry heavy boxes of books, organize them on tables, and staff the cashier table? The answer is to support the fantastic programs at the Cheshire Library!

As mentioned by Beth Crowley, CPL Library Director at our recent Friends annual meeting, the library provides a place where the community can come together and learn, be entertained, and discover new ideas. The enriching programs, arranged and provided by the creative library staff, are funded by money raised by Friends’ book sales and memberships. No taxpayer funds are used. As a Friends group, we recognize the importance of offering good programs in a clean, safe location for children, teens, adults, and seniors.

Many individuals and groups were involved in our recent successful sale. It starts with a generous community who donates their gently used books. Volunteer sorters check for quality, sort by genre, and box for storage. Cheshire’s Ace Van and Storage helps store the books and move the boxes for every sale. The Cheshire Rotarians, and the high school’s Interact Club and MechaRams helped the Friends members set up for the book sale. Stop and Shop donated bags for our Sunday “bag sale”. Of course, we couldn’t have had a sale without great cashiers, book organizers and volunteers who helped with clean up.

After the sale was over, 11 nonprofit groups and Friends organizations benefitted from our left-over books.

Special thanks go to Anthony’s Deli and Pizzeria, The Notch, Perfectly Prepared-Gourmet to Go, and Pop’s Pizza who provided gift cards for a daily door prize which added excitement to the sale.

Thanks to everyone who made our spring book sale a huge success. It allows the Friends to continue to support the wonderful programs at CPL.
